My name is Shaun Villalobos, and I never thought I would find myself asking for help like this.

I have been riding motorcycles for 45 years. Riding has always given me a sense of freedom, peace, and escape, and it has been one of the biggest passions in my life.

A few days ago, everything changed in an instant. While riding through an S turn on the road, a vehicle came into my lane, causing me to lose control and crash into a dirt bank. The driver never stopped.

I was thrown from my bike and rushed by ambulance to Palomar Hospital, where doctors discovered a brain bleed on the left side, a back injury with a bruised spinal cord, bruised ribs, and strained muscles in my hand and arm. Since the accident, I have been struggling significantly with mobility and everyday tasks that I once took for granted.

What makes this even more difficult is that I was actually on my way to a very important doctor’s appointment that day to begin testing for possible leukemia. Thankfully, I was later able to reschedule the appointment and begin the blood testing process, but it has added even more stress and uncertainty during an already overwhelming time.

My motorcycle also means far more to me than just transportation. After my mother passed away, she left me money that helped me finance this bike, so it carries a tremendous amount of sentimental value. It was also my only reliable transportation for doctor appointments, groceries, and everyday necessities because my car had already broken down and I cannot afford the repairs.

To make matters worse, I had to borrow $886.61 just to get my motorcycle out of impound after the accident, and now I am trying to pay that money back while dealing with mounting medical expenses and recovery.

Anyone who knows me knows I have always been the kind of person who is quick to help others, but I have always had a hard time asking for help myself.
