I can’t believe I’m writing this while sitting beside my father in his hospital bed.

My name is Ida Grimes, and I’m organizing this campaign for my dad, Ruben D. Benavides.

On Friday, April 24, my dad was out on a motorcycle ride with other riders, something he has loved for over 50 years. During the ride, another rider hit a rock and went down, causing a chain reaction. My father took the brunt of the accident.

Right now, my dad is in the hospital and is intubated. He is scheduled for surgery in the next couple of days to clean and treat his open wounds and severe road rash, and doctors have told us he will require multiple additional surgeries.

He suffered a ruptured bladder, a pelvic bone broken in five places, two broken ribs, multiple broken fingers on his right hand, and also had a tooth knocked out in the crash. His urethra will need to be reconstructed, and his left eye is severely swollen. His injuries are extensive, and his road to recovery will be long and uncertain.

My dad is retired, a bit of a loner, and an old-time biker who has always lived life his own way. He has five sons and one daughter, and I’m proud to be his daughter.

He is my rock. He has always been there for me when I needed him most, and now I need to be there for him.

This is not something our family is used to asking for, but we need help with medical expenses and living costs as we face the challenges ahead.
